Destination: Iceland (Golden Circle and South Coast)
Trip Length: 4 days
Type of Trip: International road trip
Travel Style: Active, experience-focused with built-in downtime
This trip was intentionally designed to maximize Iceland’s most iconic experiences within a short timeframe, without feeling chaotic or exhausting. Our main goals were to
Experience Iceland’s natural highlights, including waterfalls, geothermal sites, and black sand beaches
Balance high-energy adventure days with slower, restorative moments
Structure the route to avoid unnecessary backtracking
Build flexibility for weather shifts and spontaneous stops
We followed a loop-style route starting and ending near Keflavík, traveling east along the South Coast before returning west to Reykjavík. This kept driving manageable and allowed us to front-load outdoor adventures.
Day 1: Keflavík → Golden Circle (Þingvellir, Silfra, Brúarfoss) → South Coast
Day 2: Golden Circle & South Coast waterfalls → Vík
Day 3: Vík → Reynisfjara & Dyrhólaey → Reykjavík
Day 4: Reykjavík → Sky Lagoon → Departure
Ending the trip in Reykjavík with a lagoon visit created a perfect wind-down after several active days outdoors.

Weather apps: Checked daily to adjust pacing and expectations
Some experiences stood out so strongly they’ll stay with us forever:
Snorkeling in Silfra, floating between the European and North American tectonic plates in crystal-clear (and freezing) water
Walking behind Seljalandsfoss and hiking to quieter, hidden waterfalls nearby
Climbing Skógafoss, then continuing along the trail past smaller, lesser-known falls that felt surprisingly peaceful
Catching the Northern Lights at Grótta Lighthouse after multiple nights of trying
Ending the trip at Sky Lagoon, fully relaxed and completely content
Silfra Snorkeling
Hands down one of the coolest things we’ve ever done. Yes, the water was freezing, but the visibility, stillness, and sheer uniqueness of floating between continents made it worth every second.
Skógafoss Hike
Most people stop at the base. Climbing the 527 steps and continuing beyond transformed the experience. The crowds disappeared, and the smaller waterfalls along the trail felt quiet and underrated.
Reykjavík Evenings
From wandering Rainbow Road to chatting with local bartenders during happy hour, Reykjavík felt cozy, walkable, and full of personality, even at night.
The pace was full and active, particularly during the first two days. Weather played a big role—strong winds at Reynisfjara made it feel far colder than expected. Some mornings started slower than planned, but building flexibility into the itinerary allowed us to adjust without stress.
And yes, we tried fermented shark. Once was enough.
We were intentional about where we spent and where we saved:
Invested in a 4WD rental (Toyota Land Cruiser) for safety and flexibility
Prioritized unique paid experiences like Silfra snorkeling and Sky Lagoon
Balanced sit-down meals with quick food stops
Chose centrally located hotels to minimize extra driving
South Coast + Reykjavík works extremely well for a short first Iceland trip
Front-loading outdoor activities helps protect your itinerary from weather disruptions
One lagoon experience is plenty, quality over quantity
Buffer time makes spontaneous stops (and much-needed rest) possible
This trip worked because it balanced adventure with intention. It wasn’t about seeing everything, it was about seeing the right things in the right order. Iceland is dramatic, humbling, and absolutely worth the thoughtful planning it requires.
