Destination: Ibiza & Barcelona, Spain
Trip Length: 7 days
Type of Trip: International multi-city European trip
Travel Style: Culture-focused, food-forward, highly walkable
Group Size: 2 adults
This trip was designed to balance history, food, and festive seasonal experiences while keeping logistics manageable across two very different destinations.
Our main goals were to:
Experience Ibiza beyond its party reputation by focusing on history and landscapes
Use Barcelona as a walkable home base for deeper cultural exploration
Embrace winter travel with Christmas markets, decorations, and fewer crowds
Balance full sightseeing days with rest, spa time, and slower evenings
The trip was structured as a short island stay followed by a longer city base, allowing us to experience Ibiza without rushing and then settle into Barcelona for deeper exploration.
Ibiza (Days 1-2):
Based near Dalt Vila and Ibiza Town
Rental car used to explore viewpoints and Sant Antoni
Focus on historic sites, food, and seasonal events
Barcelona (Days 3-7):
Centrally located hotel near Plaça de Catalunya
Mostly walkable days with one major guided day trip
Mix of iconic landmarks, museums, food markets, and neighborhoods
This structure minimized transit stress while allowing each destination to shine on its own terms.
Ibiza days were shorter and slower, especially in the evenings
Barcelona days were long and walking-heavy (often 21,000+ steps)
Spa time and midday breaks helped offset physically demanding sightseeing
The final Barcelona days were intentionally lighter to recover before departure
Winter travel kept crowds manageable but still required flexibility around construction and seasonal hours.
Wanderlog: Daily planning, mapping routes, tracking stops, and pacing long walking days
Google Maps: Navigation, restaurant pinning, and neighborhood clustering
Rental car (Ibiza): Essential for exploring viewpoints and Sant Antoni comfortably
Using Wanderlog helped visualize days realistically and avoid overloading already step-heavy itineraries.
A few moments that defined the experience:
Exploring Dalt Vila, one of Europe’s oldest cities
Driving a convertible across Ibiza’s viewpoints
Experiencing Barcelona fully dressed for Christmas, from markets to historic sites
Standing inside Sagrada Família, surrounded by stained glass and centuries of history
Watching pastel winter sunsets over the preserved fort town of Tossa de Mar
Dalt Vila (Ibiza)
Walking the fortified old town, dating back to the 7th century BC, felt surreal, especially while watching Christmas dance rehearsals at the gate. It was quiet, atmospheric, and unexpectedly festive.
Sant Antoni & Island Viewpoints
Driving across Ibiza revealed a calmer, more scenic side of the island. Seeing the Christmas tree lighting near the 14th-century church made the evening feel magical.
Sagrada Família (Barcelona)
Still under construction after 140 years, this was one of the most striking religious spaces we’ve ever visited. The stained glass alone made it unforgettable.
Girona
Romantic, historic, and full of character. Between the cathedral, Game of Thrones filming locations, and the best grilled cheese and gelato we’ve ever had, this stop exceeded expectations.
Tossa de Mar (Costa Brava)
A fully intact medieval fort town with walls dating back to 881. Winter sunsets here are uniquely pastel-toned and absolutely breathtaking.
This was not a slow, leisurely European vacation—it was active, walk-heavy, and required stamina. Some days were exhausting, others restorative. Construction limited access in some areas, but quieter winter travel more than made up for it.
Frequent naps, spa time, and flexible evenings kept burnout at bay. And yes—21,000 steps became the norm more than once.
We were intentional about how we spent:
Chose centrally located hotels to reduce transit costs
Used a short-term rental car only where necessary (Ibiza)
Balanced iconic attractions with free walking, markets, and museums
Prioritized food experiences over nightlife or shopping
Ibiza offers rich history and charm beyond its nightlife reputation
Barcelona rewards travelers who plan for walkability and rest
Winter travel brings fewer crowds but requires flexibility
Guided day trips are worth it for destinations like Montserrat and Costa Brava
Central accommodations dramatically improve pacing and enjoyment
This trip worked because it embraced contrast, quiet island mornings followed by bustling city days, historic sites paired with casual food stops, and full itineraries balanced with intentional rest. Ibiza and Barcelona complemented each other beautifully, especially during the festive winter season.
Best for travelers who love walking cities, cultural depth, seasonal charm, and don’t mind long days on their feet.
